Livingston Eyre worked on all stages of the expansion and renovation of this secondary school in Chatteris. A new teaching wing and a leisure suite – for use of all the community – were sited on former playground areas. Our brief was to make sense of the external layout, incorporating new routes and uses, whilst reinstating sports and recreation facilities.
A new coach-stand area, and separate pedestrian and cycle entrance paths, replace the previous chaotic arrangement where pupils boarded coaches on the busy road fronting the school.
New courtyards have been added and existing ones renovated, creating a series of linked spaces. Some are predominantly green quiet areas; others are hard surfaced for high-energy activities. Shade sails allow pupils to gather out of the sun or rain, and an area of sculpted rubber-shred mounds is a popular informal seating area.
The scheme has provided two new full-size grass playing pitches, and a school orchard and growing area. An educational habitat space contains native planting, a wildflower meadow, and bird boxes.
