Livingston Eyre Associates was part of the winning design team in a competition for a combined play centre, nursery and community building. Located adjacent to Fortune Green Park, a small pocket park in West Hampstead, the project was to include a new multi-use games area as well as exciting new spaces for the play centre and nursery on site.
A ‘play ramp’, bristling with slides, tunnels and other opportunities for adventure, was designed to connect the first floor play centre to the outdoors. Parts of the ramp could be customised by the children, for instance by painting the recycled timber cladding in a multitude of colours or decorating the dens.
The space was designed for all ages and abilities, encouraging engagement with an outdoors incorporating natural play, growing areas, sand play, habitat areas and even a grass area on which to pitch a tent for supervised sleep-overs.
Closer to the park, existing trees were to be incorporated into a quieter, wildlife-friendly area with opportunities for play and exploration scattered among the forest of tree trunks.
