The Lee Valley Athletics Centre is a state-of-the-art training centre used by some of the 2012 gold medallists but also local athletes, schools and clubs. Facilities include a 200m internal track and a 400m external track overlooked by a covered stand. Livingston Eyre Associates was part of the design team that developed proposals for the site from concept stage through to construction.
The design used fill from excavating the site to create a bank that helps protect training athletes using the outdoor track, and those in the throws and jump areas, from prevailing winds. The bank doubles as an informal spectator area and envelops the edges of the terraced stand.
A new entrance square provides a formal space outside the main doors, and car parking was carefully arranged to allow the retention of mature trees. The whole project is successfully integrated into its green belt location, with extensive planting to the track peripheries, access road and building frontages.
